The History

The year is 1841 and the first tree falls in a town soon to be called Little Falls. As our nation is awaking, the Ingersoll brothers, Thomas and James, responsible for falling that tree, along side others, begin shaping the town we now know as St. Marys. With every growing community comes the darkness of death and this town was no different. One of the requirements placed by the Canada Company, needing to be met, was that wherever town lots were to be sold, a spot for a cemetery was to be set aside. Records show that prior to the old cemetery a primitive burial ground was once located west of the CNR tracks between Queen and Jones St. (No records have been found or know to exist, for this location.)
According to a notebook, left by a former resident, Nettie Fairbairn, the first burials were right behind Lorne Eedy's Residence. Research indicates it as located on the same site as an old stone schools house, (southwest corner of Queen St, James St. S and Jones St.) This school acted as both Church and School, the original Anglican graveyard surrounded it. There are no longer any remains of the Schoolhouse, cemetery or church.

Not an actual photo of the first school. Possible recreation of the School / Church / Graveyard which served as the initial resting place of the original settlers to the area.

As for the Old St. Marys Cemetery, this is what we know; the land, originally owned by James Ingersoll, was graciously donated to be shared among the three parishes of St. Marys: Anglican Methodist, and Presbyterian. This burial ground, which was once divided into three distinct sections, designated for a church and cemetery to each congregation. Although the congregations would chose to build their churches in separate parts of the town, this area served as the sole cemetery, aside from the Catholic Cemetery, located off Cain St..

This map, in the Perth County Atlas 1878, by H.R. Beldon & Co shows the divisions. Also, listed is a reference to a list of burials from work done by a Orlo Miller of London, possibly in the 1930s, as a recorded the headstones standing at that time. Unfortunately, many stones had already been lost and the remaining, other than a handful would become cemented into a single monument at the far west corner of the park.

As you can assume placing names to all these pioneers will be difficult and I expect that there will remain a few missing, as many notes are left regarding missing, lost or incorrect information. Some mention is made of  these lists not beginning to "account for the true number of people buried in this four acre area, as in the early days headstones were only placed on the graves of those who were more or less well-to-do."

Other pioneers could have been buried in the St. James' Churchyard, Stratford

In the year 1855, St. Marys, was incorporated, separate from Blanshard Township and became it's own entity. The area covered by the town was estimated at 400 acres and expanded to 2980 acres at the time of incorporation . By 1861, the Grand Trunk Rail had reached St.Marys, making this small town a busy shipping point, census records show St. Marys with a population on 2728 citizens, and growing.

As it continued to grow, 1864, brought the first elected town council, consisting of W.V. Hutton, Gilbert McIntosh, John McDonald, Peter Murray Nicol and Thomas B. Guest (St. Marys 1st Mayor). T. B. Guest had served as reeve for 9 years, prior to becoming mayor in 1864. In 1865, St. Marys, made the move to transition from village to town, withdrawing from the county government.

Throughout this period, although unmentioned, life was occurring as was death. The land donated to the churches for burial was becoming filled to capacity and was not maintained by any of the parishes. There came a time when the cemetery was in such disarray that the churches leaned on the town and requested help to correct the issues created.

As space was limited, council made the decision to establish a new burial site. Consequently, as of December 31, 1885, the cemetery ceased to permit any further burials. In 1886, the St. Marys Cemetery on Cain St was opened, along side the Catholic cemetery. Situated on serene and spacious land purchased from T.B. Guest and M. Eagen, whereas another document lists the land as purchased from James Guest in 1885. The new St. Marys Cemetery interred the first person on December 18th, 1885, when Mrs. Sarah J. Dickey, was interred there. This new cemetery remains active to this day, maintained beautifully and providing a fitting place of rest to our departed.

As for the Old Cemetery, it was around 1886 to 1911, when record show some graves being moved from the Old Cemetery to the new one. Along with others from smaller outlying cemeteries. Not all graves were moved and the reasons for this vary, some families did not have the money, some headstones were already lost to time, some graves were never marked, strong beliefs in letting resting souls rest and a desire not to disturb the dead was another.

A previous postmaster of the day, E.F. Lancaster , who's grandparents are interred in the Old cemetery, is quoted in an article remembering the day his father was approached by the delegation, urging his to relocate his parents to the new cemetery.  "His father refused, saying that his parents had chosen and bought the land where they were buried, many years before and there they shall remain." Whatever the reason, a number of souls still rest in East Ward Park.

Alas, they were neglected again, still the property of the churches. From the point of the last relocation, around 1911 until the 1940s, neglect, disrepair and time were not kind the the original cemetery on Elgin. Records have been lost, burned or were never recorded at the time. The area was overgrown, unkept and a heartbreaking reminder of the importance on preservation and maintenance.A recovered article obtained through the St.Marys Museum, believed to be from 1940, with no author credited, explains the exhaustive restoration efforts put forth at that time but the Anglican Church, in regards to the grounds renovation. Referring to the grounds as "forty years of wilderness and weeds". Several years prior an agreement was made that the burial grounds be cleaned up and become a credit to the town. Mr. Arthur Gooch, was given the daunting task and over many months with much hard work, he leveled, cleared the growth and cleaned the cemetery. Repositioning the remaining stones in their approximate original locations. These repairs were funded through monies raised by the church, legacies and general funds.

However, these improvements did not last long and were not maintained.

In 1943, just 3 years later, a reporter S. Garrett, with the London Free Press, actually reported on the state of the cemetery. His article referred to the "deplorable condition." With overgrowth covering most graves, it was speculated that most residents did not even know this was a cemetery at the time. The articles goes on to refer to the large number of people interred here as "still hundreds of tombstones in various stages of preservation in evidence". Making comments that some time ago an attempt had been made to renovate the burial grounds with little to no progress made, possibly referring to the work done in 1940.

The cemetery is briefly described as follows, " The Anglican graveyard is quite large and surrounded by a wire fence. Not far from the gate is a large slab stone, the face of which is divided into two sections. On one section is the name Margaret wife of A.M German died 1829, and Hester Ann, wife of A.M. German 1849. Both women 22 years of age at time of death.

Side by side are the graves of Mary, Wife of John Dinsmore, dies 1855, in her 32 year, and Mary, Wife of Robert McCollough, dies 1856, aged 25. Still in evidence are memorials to John Guest, died, 1860, aged 38, William Frederick Bussell, died 1862, aged 25; George Weston, died 1865, aged 46; and Thomas Williams, died 1865, aged 47. The later a native of London Eng." The article goes on to list more names and dates from the stones remaining at that time. Truly a treasure chest of lost info.

The article continues with mention of "the grave of Thomas Ingersoll Sr. died 1847, age 53. The Ingersolls were a prominent family in the early days of both Ingersoll and St.Marys." A fairly humble mention of the towns founder, but verification that the stone existed.

"East of the Anglican is the Methodist burial ground. Some years ago a street was built through it and the land on both sides plowed up and cropped. Houses are also said to have been built in some parts of it. Most of the tombstones seem to have been drawn to the fence along the east side of it and left there. There are scores of them, mostly slab stones along the fence and many more lying in clumps of shrubbery near by."

"Still further east is the old Presbyterian cemetery, surrounded by an iron fence." I must give the credit to S. Garrett for such a descriptive article and all the names provided within.  Although they are not listed here, I will ensure they are documented and recorded in the Old Saint Marys Cemetery  on findagrave.com.

The article concludes referring to a stone left blank on one side, "A large slab stone marks the burial plot of the Falconer family. Half of the top part is devoted to William Falconer, dies 1857, aged 48. The bottom part contains the names of Barbara dies 1871, aged 23, and John1867 aged 10. The other half of the top section was probably intended for his wife's name, but apparently, after she had passed on there were none of the family left to see that it was inscribed."

By the 1960s, numerous articles, but nothing was actually done with this area until a housing development was slated to go directly through the Methodist section. It was at that time the local groups within St. Marys and the rec dept converted it to a park. Although with best intentions, the stones not relocated to the new Cemetery, were removed to a cairn in the east corner, whereas the others were piled and cemented into a monument in the west corner. Unfortunately, leaving most unreadable, unrestorable and lost forever.

The Current Situation

So, why we find ourselves here today. Unknown to many, although the Town of St.Marys had cared and maintained this cemetery as a park since the 1960s, the cemetery/park remained the property of the 3 parishes. In trying to transfer ownership to the town, they were required to disclose the parks current use to the BAO (Bereavement Authority of Ontario). This resulted in the request for an inspection, and the decision. To be in accordance with the regulation established in 2002, the activities must cease. The reason is quite simple and respectful, the active use of this cemetery is in violation of "the quiet dignity" promised to the deceased and their families.  Removal of all active use activities is required but passive use activities are permitted. It is my understanding that the Town of St.Marys and BAO are in discussion on how they can meet all the requirements and both have the best interest of the deceased and the living in mind.

Why is this Important?

Cemeteries are our doorways to the past, the headstones are the keys. They are Museums, Art Galleries, Arboretums of Family Trees, History Lessons, Contemplative Places of Peace, and so much more. Not only do the headstones provide detailed information of the people they stand for. They provide clues to historic events, showing the devastation of sickness and war. Bring together communities, where you can walk among the friends, neighbours, and family of your loved ones, reading names, and reliving memories. They mark the names and events that shaped our town and ourselves, standing as constant reminders of our connection and who we descended from. Cemeteries show trends through time, etching in stone the traditions, customs and cultures that make our community. Cemeteries are these things and so much more. Preservation and protection of these irreplaceable artifacts is crucial and ensuring the names are recognized, when the monuments can no longer stand is vital.

On the global scale, our cemeteries are mere toddlers, with cities aboard boasting cemeteries 500 plus years old with stones still standing. Preservation is key. it's not to late to start again

The Goal

Through research of old documents, articles and museum records, I have began to compile a list of all the pioneers interred in the old cemetery with the hopes of having all of their names listed on a monument.

Forever marking their place, restoring their family lines, honouring the town founders and ancestors that walked before us. As information is uncovered I have been recording their place virtually on findagrave.com.
