The Holy Trinity – Research, Restore and Record - Series Introduction

At a quiet intersection of Perth Road 107 and the 29th Line of Perth County, Ontario. Just outside of Tavistock with Shakespeare to the west, we find the quiet, yet proud village of Sebastopol. Previously, within the township of South Easthope, lying on the edge of one county and dangling on the other. Always seeming to be torn between two worlds, yet grounded in it's own traditions.

Here the wind ripples through the tall grass of Perth and Oxford, blurring the lines between counties and family. Wrapping its breeze around the historic yellow brick, with red accented sentinel. The beacon to generations, towering above the trees for decades, the heart of a community, the place where many sought comfort, the church. It was here that generations had been married, born and buried. It was here on the grounds, community and patrons were lovingly guarded and guided by The Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Some pass by this corner never noticing the grounds, some notice but never give it a second thought. This series is for those who take notice, those who care about these graves, the people, the memories and the stories. The people that are curious when they see an old church and graveyard; the ones drawn to historic buildings and peaceful burial grounds; the people that see them as I do. As memories, heartbreak, triumph, joy and fear. Hopes, dreams, success and failures. Memories written in granite, marble and limestone, that due to the natural passing of time are slowly fading. I see stories of the past slowly being lost or shelved with good intentions to digitize one day. I see an opportunity to make a difference, to provide what I consider to be the Holy Trinity – Research, Restoration and Record.

This spring, Eternal Care Stone Services is embarking on a journey to restore the markers of those who built this church, those whose voices echoed from the pews and whose hands shaped the very land we casually drive past without a second thought. This series will hopefully change that, providing focus on the church, the patrons, the grave markers and restorations. Covering all aspects of this project, providing something for everyone, and even a possible opportunity for a hands on learning experience.

The Holy Trinity series will invite you to join as the community comes together in raising the first church, building the current, and the changes along the way. It will explore the restoration of century old stones, discuss the techniques used to restore and document a cemetery and provide insight to the importance of maintaining these artifact as long as possible. In addition, I will also dive into the personal lives and stories of the neighbours, friends and family interred here. The industrious pioneers, brave adventurers, unrelenting farmers, heartbroken mothers, heroic soldiers and so called average people that built the community we know today.

So please join us for The Holy Trinity, a series uncovering the research, restoration and recording of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Project. Stories where we shine a spotlight on the history and the families who rest peacefully, just beneath the soil of the Trinity graveyard. Come along as we restore the headstones, record the details and recount tales of the founders of Sebastopol, Ontario, reviving the past, generation after generation, stone by stone. Posts will be made weekly on Wednesdays and will cover the topics mentioned.

Be sure to follow our facebook page Eternal Care Stone Services for regular updates and information. Feel free to reach out to me at anytime, my name is Angie. I look forward to all the positive chanes we can make and the history we can protect.

The following gallery shows the stones that are scheduled to be restored. We will call these the before pictures, and with that the Trinity Project has begun.
